Katie picked up the wash cloth, soaped it, and began to rub the cloth over her shoulders. She winced when the soap and water hit the cut along her shoulder blade. Dipping the cloth in the water, she continued washing the sand off her body.

She poured water over her short hair, washed, and rinsed it. Her lips curved with in a rueful smile at the fine grains. She gave her hair a second wash to make sure she got all the sand out of it. Her fingers trailed along the uneven ends and she sighed. The jig was up.

Well, you were planning on telling him the truth tonight. At least you won’t have to worry about it anymore. He seems to be dealing with it alright so far.

The thought that he didn’t blow up at her made her curl her toes again. She bit her lip as she finished washing. He had always been so gentle and kind with her. Would he be forgiving as well?

“Once he knows everything, he’ll understand,” she murmured as she drained the tub and rose. “He has to… because… because it would break my heart if I lost him.”

She dried off with the towel and hung it on the towel rack. Glancing around, she noticed a tall cupboard next to the sink. One shelf contained several robes. Relief swept through her as she retrieved a clean robe and slid it on.

Gathering the soaked, dirty robe, she wrung it out as best she could and draped it over the side of the tub. She rolled the fine fabric between her fingers.

A small smile curved her lips as she thought of Raja’s thoughtfulness. She breathed deeply, searching for a way to calm her racing heart. She was procrastinating because she wasn’t ready to deal with facing Raja and how he would react now that he knew she was a woman.

“Who are you kidding? You’re more afraid of what you’ll do, not him!” she grumbled.

Taking a deep, calming breath, she stiffened her shoulders—and winced. Everything will be okay. She just had to keep telling herself that.

Satisfied that she was cool, calm, and collected, Katie pulled the front of the robe tighter around her and stepped into the bedroom… and promptly forgot everything she was going to say.
